Watchlist: I'm a Piece of Art, Now Pay Me

From drag to sex work, from the stage to the screen: how do you craft an illusion, and what does it truly cost? Queer artists have long found creative ways to carve out space and make a living in a world that often fails to support them. Through performance, reinvention, or resilience, they navigate the fine line between survival and self-expression. What sacrifices must be made to thrive? Where does artistry end and commodification begin?

In the gray port town of Dieppe in northern France, one day fisherman Erwan walks into cabaret ‘The Bearded Mermaid’, a brand new world of glitter and show. He embraces it with both arms, and with him we enter the dressing rooms, and the joys and sorrows of the drag artists.

While nowadays for many people 'drag’ is defined by the perfection of RuPaul, this charming film gives a warm portrait of the messy, but self-chosen family of this - really existing! - small town cabaret.
