Romance in a cable car: Roze Filmdagen kicks off with Gondola, the latest film from director Veit Helmer

The 27th edition of Roze Filmdagen is starting off with the stylish film Gondola. Director Veit Helmer (Tuvalu) takes us on a journey to the mountains of Georgia. There, a cable car with two tiny cabins forms the lifeline of the villages that lie on each side of a deep canyon. The story follows young Iva, who returns to her native village and is hired there as a conductor on the cable car. While working, she develops an unexpected distant friendship with Nina, the girl who works in the other cabin. As the two women start playing a slow-burning game of check, their relationship develops into an overt and hilarious flirtation.

With a keen eye for detail and a style reminiscent of Wes Anderson's work, Gondola guarantees a lighthearted and entertaining start to Roze Filmdagen 2024.

MUSICAL FILMS AT ROZE FILMDAGEN 2024

Roze Filmdagen celebrates the power of music this year with, in addition to the opening film Gondola, a diverse selection of films in which music plays a central role. From musical icons and uplifting soundtracks to heartbreaking melodies, these films highlight the power of music as a universal language of expression, emotion and identity:

Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero: follows pioneering rapper, singer and songwriter Lil Nas X on his very first tour. An intimate portrait of an artist searching for identity, family, expectations and acceptance.

Chuck Chuck Baby: A bittersweet comedy about love and loss, set in a chicken factory in contemporary North Wales. Helen spends her nights on the assembly line and her days caring for her dying mother-figure Gwen. Helen's world is turned upside down by the return of Joanne, a former flame from her school days. The feelings are mutual in this a-typical musical, and as they fall in love, Helen's zest for life returns. Featuring music by Neil Diamond, Janis Ian, Minnie Riperton and many others.

Glitter & Doom: Dive into an mesmerising musical romance inspired by the hits of the (listed below) iconic, Grammy Award-winning Indigo Girls. In this film, we follow musician Doom and free-spirited circus boy Glitter during their fledgling summer romance, filled with camping trips, deep conversations and exuberant song and dance. As they try to find their way in the entertainment industry, they discover what satisfies their hearts’ desires and fuels their dreams.

It's Only Life After All: Through a combination of home videos, archival footage and intimate interviews, this Indigo Girls documentary offers an up-to-date look at the obstacles, activism and life lessons of two queer friends, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, who never expected to face such success. A film about how their unique style of folk-rock became an anthem of self-acceptance for a generation.
