"The question the mother asks in the trailer has stayed with me: why do we have to decide what the gender of our baby is? As a trans/non-binary person, I can relate to what it’s like to go through life in a gender that doesn’t feel like home. The trailer beautifully shows the difficult dilemma parents of an intersex child face."

NEWBORN

Beautiful drama about a young couple with an unusual child

Friday the 20th of March 16:00 | Ketelhuis 2 > Tickets

Saturday the 28th of March 11:00 | Ketelhuis 2 > Tickets: Co-presenter: Spread the Word Intersex Collective

About the film:

The birth of their first child presents a young couple with a moral turning point. When it turns out their baby is intersex, they each follow different paths, driven by the same question: what is best for their child?

One parent clings to medical certainty and advocates for early surgery, while the other listens to the voices of intersex people and chooses to wait and respect their bodies. As the distance between them grows, so does the weight of their choice.

"I love a lesbian feel-good movie, especially one where resilience, courage, and a healthy dose of queer pride come together in a humorous way."

MANOK

A heartwarming lesbian/queer comedy about sticking to your ideals

Thursday the 19th of March 21:00 | Ketelhuis 2 > Tickets

Sunday the 29th of March 16:00 | Ketelhuis 3 > Tickets

About the film:

For twenty years, feisty and outspoken Manok has run a lesbian bar in Seoul. Recently, she has started clashing with the younger generation of activists and customers, who aren’t spending enough at her bar, and do not respect the battles she fought in previous decades. The young ones, in their turn, find her bar and attitude a bit stuffy and old-fashioned.

After yet another fight, she moves to the rural village where she has just inherited her mother’s house. Here, new challenges arise: she never came out of the closet there, and her bitter ex-husband is the mayor. Manok dives into a campaign headfirst and sets out to change the village forever.

"I always find a bromance between a straight man and a gay man so beautiful and fascinating. Two men building a close bond—but can it truly exist without any sexual tension? In Twinless, their connection feels to me almost like two grieving brothers rediscovering their relationship in seemingly tender ways."

Roman and Dennis both search for solace and an identity without their other halves and soon become inseparable outside the group.

"This is a beautiful, summery road movie that will linger in my mind for a long time. It has the same Call Me By Your Name vibes, but much more mysterious and intimate."

STRANGE RIVER

Atmospheric road movie in which a teenager discovers new feelings during a bicycle holiday

Sixteen-year-old Dídac and his family are spending the summer holidays on a bicycle trip along the Danube.

"Just for the acting talent of the young lead, Griffin, I would watch the film. I’m also very curious to see how the dynamic between the handsome handyman and young Griffin will develop. The trailer is incredibly dry, humorous, and promising. A must-see."

GRIFFIN IN SUMMER

Bittersweet, hilarious and original

Saturday the 21st of March 13:30 | Ketelhuis 3 > Tickets

Tuesday the 24th of March 16:00 | Ketelhuis 1 > Tickets

About the film:

Whereas the summer holidays are a relaxing time for most teens, fourteen-year-old Griffin instead has burning ambitions: his latest dramatic play is going to be a cross between Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and American Beauty.

Unfortunately, his obvious genius isn’t always recognised in his sleepy hometown, and his cast members are distracted by shallow pursuits like summer camp and boyfriends.

Perhaps hunky, woozy handyman Brad could be a kindred spirit; after all, Brad was once a failed performance artist in New York…

"Since Olivia Colman said she has always felt non-binary, she has stolen my heart. The trailer lightly shows how generations can clash with one another. Non-binary perspectives are still far too rarely told, so I absolutely don’t want to miss this film."

JIMPA

Warm, joyous celebration of queer identity, community, and chosen family

Saturday the 21st of March 18:30 | Ketelhuis 1 > Tickets

Thursday the 26th of March 21:00 | Ketelhuis 1 > Tickets

About the film:

Hannah takes her nonbinary teenager, Frances, to Amsterdam to visit their gay, HIV-positive grandfather, Jim, lovingly known as Jimpa. But Frances’ desire to stay abroad with Jimpa for a year means Hannah is forced to reconsider her beliefs about parenting and finally confront old stories about the past.

Hannah also revisits her relationship with her father and wishes to make a film about his life.

"This film seems very entertaining and relatable. That first queer crush is exciting and sometimes scary, especially at school where you just want to be like everyone else. So how do you deal with that as a teenager? The characters in the trailer are also a joy to watch."

BLACK BURNS FAST

Delightful coming-of-age story from South Africa

Friday the 20th of March 18:30 | Ketelhuis 2 > Tickets: co-presenter: DBUFF

Friday the 27th of March 16:00 | Ketelhuis 2 > Tickets

About the film:

Seventeen-year-old, adorkable Luthando expects a fairly ordinary academic year until the arrival of Ayanda turns her world upside down. In the aftermath of this encounter, Luthando is forced to navigate multiple identities as she struggles to avoid rejection from both her mother and her schoolmates, while coming to terms with her sexuality.

With desire, friendship and rivalry rushing around the school corridors, this is an original take on first love, self discovery and balancing your desires with the demands of fitting in.

"Last but not least: I acted in this beautiful animated short film set between the Netherlands and China. The main character, Hoi, fights against censorship in China as a journalist but hides his queer identity from his family. The film was intentionally animated to protect the safety of the actors. I haven’t seen the film myself yet, and I’m curious to see how his personal struggle comes to life."
